    Matchmaking


    CLARIFICATION:

    I've been asked to clarify the Elo system above. It makes sense for a single player but not for teams. Does a player on 1 team get rated against a player that he beat on the other team?

    Here's how a team works:

    At the start of a match, all player's on ONE team have their Elo ratings totaled and divided by 8 (max players). You may realized that this is simply the AVERAGE of a team's total Elo. Team 1's average and Team 2's average are then used to calculate the probability of win (as per the formulas above). If Team 1 beats Team 2, then the appropriate math as above is applied to each player using the probability score calculated by the team averages.

    Some people also asked to have the description simplified. Here's the summary:
    - The Match Maker uses a scoring system to determine if your team is more likely to win or lose based on your team's average Elo rating.
    - If the Match Maker determines that you're going to lose, but you actually win, then your Elo score is going to go up and the enemy's score is going to go down.
    - If the Match Maker determines that you're going to win and you actually win, then your Elo score isn't going to change very much (if at all). The same applies to a prediction of loss and you actually lose, your score may drop but it will be slight.
    - The more games you participate in, the more accurate the Match Maker becomes and you will start seeing that you are playing against people of relative equal skill.

    Weapon Balancing


    Update on the above:

    After review, it seems that Large Lasers are working at a rate that is fairly well balanced. That being said, the Large PULSE Laser and ER-Large Lasers seem to be generating too much heat. I've found some new numbers that work fairly well and we'll be putting this into test after the holidays.

    The PPC and ER-PPCs also seem to be generating a bit too much heat and like above, I've found new numbers that seem to work and have those going into test as well.

    Because this is a very sensitive subject with you all, I am expecting these changes to appear early to mid January because I want to make sure that numerous Mech builds are thoroughly tested before releasing it to the Live servers.

    Weapon Bay Door Indicator Lights Missing


    Due to a fail, our mechanics have disabled your Weapon Bay Door Indicator Lights this

    - PATCH 1.2.168

    . The problem was caught early but did not get fixed by this release.

    This affects all models that have Weapon Bay Doors.
    CATAPULT
    CENTURION
    STALKER

    Sorry for the inconvenience, they should be back next patch.

    The weapon bay door toggle was unaffected.

    Technical Issues Update


    Well it's been quite the year and it's hard to believe that just over a year ago there wasn't a line of code or single process in place for MechWarrior Online. We've come a long way but as we've also stated we know we still have a lot further to go.

    So let me take a moment to address some of the most commonly noted technical issues.

    4 FPS Bug

    Well not exactly 4 fps obviously but this has become the common term for the issue where the games frame-rate suddenly plummets to single digit performance. So what is going on with this issue? Well as is generally the case with a bug that doesn't get resolved quickly this issue has proved hard for us to reproduce consistently.

    So as we regularly do for a bug like this we take a longer term approach and raise the quality of our overall tools for tracking and reproducing these types of issues. In the New Year we have additional telemetry coming online for tracking fps issues and also server side fps issues.

    This data helps us to isolate and fix not just a single issue but gives us better insight and therefore hopefully faster resolution for any future 'mystery' performance issues that occur. We also have greatly improved profiling tools internally which as you saw with the Dec 18th patch really help us to isolate issues and improve performance. This will only continue in the New Year and our internal tools continue to improve as much each patch as the external game does.

    Game Server Performance

    Some users have noted that performance can degrade during evening play, as just mentioned we have increased our ability to monitor server side performance and our tools to replicate performance issues and we'll be tackling server side performance in the new year now client performance is coming under control (after the 4fps bug is resolved).

    Yellow screen bug

    This can definitely be annoying and we appreciate the frustration when these issues slip through our processes and out onto production. As has also been stated we continue to improve the processes we use to deliver reliable patches. As you can see with the Dec 18th patch this was our largest patch yet which fixed a lot of issues and added a lot of content without major disruption.

    We know were not perfect yet though and issues like this one have crept out, we continue to scale up the number of platforms we test on and we're bringing online automated testing tools online to catch more and more issues before they can ever reach production. The yellow screen bug was being worked on into the break and we hope to have it fixed quickly in the New Year.

    Memory Leak

    We acknowledge the game currently leaks resources, another thread we've been pushing on recently and will continue to push on is we've been cleaning up the game logs and the code-base and taking more time to ensure that features once completed are really carefully reviewed for design flaws, memory issues etc. before they can start making their way to production.

    The goal is to resolve this issue in January and as mentioned we're improving our automated testing tools to catch memory/performance issues regularly and early for future builds.

    Well hopefully this helps to shed some light on some of the recent technical issues. As you can gather there's a lot of work behind the scenes that goes into tools etc. that don't instantly improve the game but have an impact over the long run.

    We hope you’re able to enjoy MechWarrior Online in its current state over the holidays. It's been a great year and a real pleasure to be part of bringing back MechWarrior for the fans that have been waiting so long for it to return (myself included).

    Q: Is anything going to be done about in-game voice options? The C3 thing seems deserted/abandoned, and I've never seen it used. We really need voice with PUGs. Tell me something good is going to happen here, please. ;_; [Levesque]
    A: We're still on it, don't worry. I don't have specific dates to give you, but as soon as I do I will let you know [Garth]

    Q: Can we please have a hero Atlas mech. I love my atlases and would love nothing more then a hero variant. If so can you guys bring it out sooner then later....Please. [Nightcrept]
    A: I'll see what I can do, though it's a pretty safe bet we'll have one eventually. [Garth]

    Q: How much does the brevity of a question affect whether it gets answered or not? [Farix]
    A: It's more coherancy and clarity than brevity. I often take the actual 'question' out of long paragraphs to answer, as otherwise half the Q&A answers are reading someones reasoning [Garth]

    Q: What localisations are planned? [Vovochka404]
    A: As we add territories I imagine we'll add those languages in. It'll be an 'over time' thing. [Garth]

    Q: Will there ever be a virtual 'Mech Lab on the web site or the ability from within the game client to preview and customize 'Mechs prior to purchasing so we can see if our loadout plans work? [Kilgor]
    A: It is a possibility that we're looking into. I'd love it, myself, so there is internal thumbs up for it [Garth]

    Q: Any plans for making toggling an option for TAG, rather than having to hold down the fire button for it? [Grissnap]
    A: Yes, we're looking into this. [Garth]

    Q: Do lights take the same amount of damage as other non-light mech classes from other mech classes? [Rooikat]
    A: Yes, they do. Mechs all use the same weapons, so different class/variants wouldn't do different damage. [Garth]

    Q: Any plans for "assymetric" game types, e.g. one side defending (or escorting) ,and the other side attacking? [MustrumRidcully]
    A: For the future, yes. [Garth]

    Q: What do you prefer - Scottish or Irish Whiskey? [Quax1102]
    A: That is a crazy tough call. Initially I wanted to say Scottish and then admonish you for spelling it 'whiskey,' but then my Irish side head-butted my Scottish side and slurred something about Jameson. [Garth]

    Q: Any plans on adding command/communication shortcuts for the chat system or the UI that allows us to call out a target or mark a target in the HUD, to "ping" a location or ask for aid, simlar to how previous Mechwarrior games had commands to communicate with lance mates? [MustrumRidcully]
    A: I believe we do have plans for a quick communication system (IE. CS, Rainbow Six, etc), though I'm not sure about location ping. [Garth]

    Q: Has there been any thoughts by you guys to help boost FF, to make it an upgrade, instead of a next step upgrade to ES? [Zyllos]
    A: Yes we have, and they are ongoing. We have a few ideas, though a nice first step was removing the repair cost fromt he game [Garth]

    Q: So... could it be, that in all mechs real equipped weapons shown correctly with different models for SL and LL, AC-2 and AC-10, PPC ect..? And if weapons not equipped - there be "empty" places. [Warge]
    A: This is something that is added over time. The K2 and Hunchbacks already show this, but it is a very time consuming thing to do. Once we’ve covered the major hurdles of features and Mech customization, we will be expanding resources on these type of visual upgrades. [Paul]

    Q: All media on this game was pointing to 12 vs 12 battles. Then we get in and its only 8 on 8. When are we getting the bigger drops? [iminbagdad]
    A: We test in 12v12 currently, but until external stability improves, we'll be sticking to 8v8. [Garth]

    Q: How are our names going to appear in the credits for legendary founders? Will we have a choice how they appear? Real name? pilot name? [StringyQuark]
    A: We're going to ask you Essentially the template is [FirstName][Handle][LastName], but if people want they can go with just their name, or just their handle [Garth]

    Q: When are you planning to drop the news bombshell, ruining many people's hopes and dreams, that the Urbanmech will never, ever, ever, ever be in MWO? Cute little cockpit items don't count [Thontor]
    A: They can announce that when I am cold and dead in the ground. [Garth]

    Q: Well as I asked in (StD29), will any of the Spider variants be able to equip the Guardian ECM? [Monsoon]

    Q: I read recently (from you Garth) that torso twist speed increases with larger engine sizes. How exactly is this calculated? Also are there any other benefits beside torso twist speed, run speed, and heatsinks? [Jman5]
    A: I'm not sure of the math involved - but those are the only changes made due to engine size. [Garth]

    Q: Since there are alot of canon paint schemes with Bronze, Silver, and Gold paint. Will these colors be added sometime in the near future? [Hollister]
    A: We will be adding as many colours as we possibly can over time. I can't say when specific colours are in, but chances are it'll be there at some point. [Garth]

    Q: When can we reorganize the Mechlab order/rename our Mechs? [EveryoneEver]
    A: This is an upcoming feature of UI 2.0. [Paul]

    Q: Will there be a fullscreen, borderless window mode for the Mech lab / pre-game area? [Lon3Wol1f]
    A: Yes, when the Mechlab 2.0 system is ready. [Garth]

    Q: Garth, What would your custom hero mech be? [Ashnod]
    A: Oh man, awesome question... How about two?
    - NUMBER 1: UrbanMech - with XL engines, endosteel, and a max speed of _ninety_ KP/H. Has a PPC and two ML's. Torso twist 360. Torso twist speed is lightning fast. Paintscheme: My family tartan, with glowing neon-blue viewports.
    - NUMBER 2: Cicada - 6x ML (three in each arm) and a missile slot in one of the torsos to make it more OP. Around 140 KM/h speed, max armour and heatsinks, best torso turn/speed possible. Paintscheme: Midnight blue and black.

    Q: After seeing a couple of days of how a Conquest match works in your original design, are there any changes you're considering to promote going to the capture points over getting in the middle and making it another TDM? [KuruptU4Fun]
    A: We have a few tweaks planned, mostly to do with the speed the germanium is gathered, and bonuses for capturing the points. [Garth]

    Greetings MechWarriors!
    And… we’re back! We hope everyone had a safe and fun holiday season full of BattleMech Combat. The content of this patch was work that was started shortly before the holiday break and there was a focus on getting some quality fixes and improvements. We wanted to start the New Year on the right - giant metallic stomping - foot so to speak!
    Included in the patch are movement fixes, [and] animation fixes. There are more fixes in there as well so read on.
    Most importantly we want you guys to know how excited we are. We have been plotting out this year’s content and feature schedule and it’s going to be a big year. Stick with us and you will be able to say “I remember when…”. So strap in, initiate your start up sequence, and get ready to drop.
    3050 is the year of MechWarrior Online.

    Conquest:
    · Changed it so you now get a resource every 1.7 seconds instead of 2 seconds.
    · Increased the reward for collected resources from 25 per resource to 50 per resource.

    Performance:
    More FPS improvements
    · We have seen an increase in performance for the majority for all specs, however there may be a handful of users that may notice a performance drop. As always we are continuing to investigate and improve on the performance for all specs.

    Movement:
    · Reduced/improved snapping when jump jetting
    · Reduced/improved movement snapping in general
    · You should no longer need to fire ahead of where a mech powers down or shuts down in order to hit them

    Faction Icon (Known Issue)
    · Changing your website faction icon may not be accurately reflected in the game interface.

    Numerous Front End bug fixes.

    Various In Game bug fixes.
    · Bullets will no longer pass through things and explode twice
    · Cockpit light will no longer flicker at the lowest setting at low fps (<20)
    · Weapon Bay Door lights are back.
